NE8 Metro – What is it? NE8 Metro is Gateshead’s very own Next Generation Internet, provided by NE1 in conjunction with G-ti. G-ti is a joint venture between Gateshead Council and Alcatel Lucent.
Most traditional broadband is provided by the larger telecoms companies over copper, known as ADSL or SDSL. We provide our services over Fibre, which is faster and does not degrade the further you get from the exchange.
Why is NE8 Metro better than ‘broadband’When you have broadband (or ADSL) it is provided over your copper based telephone line from the telephone exchange. The further you are from the exchange the more the ADSL signal deteriorates. Copper cabling in the ground is also prone to deterioration because of factors like the weather and water ingress.
ASDL is also aggregated at the exchange into a single connection for the service provider… Most commercial ADSL has a contention ratio of 20:1, meaning that 20 ADSL connections are sharing the same bandwidth from the exchange to the service provider. If one ADSL connected business downloads a lot of files, service to the other 19 users becomes slower.
ADSL is also faster at downloading then uploading. Typically, most ADSL users will have a connection that might be capable of downloading at 8Mb but only uploading at 448k.
NE8 Metro uses fibre connectivity, which does not deteriorate with distance and our contention ratio is 1:1, meaning if you order 2Mb, you get 2Mb for both uploading and downloading. You can upload files faster with NE8 Metro, ideal if you are a business that exchanges a lot of data.
